Finding Value in Every Step of the Journey
At 73, I embarked on an incredible journey with Farmz to climb Mt. Fuji on July 4, 2024. My preparation included regular morning walks of 30 minutes to an hour, incorporating stair climbing, and completing long walks to Bukit Timah and Kent Ridge Park. Despite some joint discomfort during extended walks, my condition has been improving steadily.

I joined this initiative to challenge myself and achieve something that once seemed impossible. The idea of conquering Mt. Fuji was incredibly motivating. Training has been rigorous and rewarding. We were encouraged to carry a 5 kg backpack during our preparation. My routine included daily walks, stair climbing, and occasional long-distance hikes, all contributing to my preparedness.
On the day of the climb, we were a group of eight, aged between 60 and 70, accompanied by a mountain guide. The route was challenging, especially for us seniors, but we moved carefully and supported each other. At one point, our guide expressed concerns about our ability to continue, urging us to turn back. Determined to fulfill our goal, we persisted, reaching Station 6 at 2400 meters.
However, at Station 6, our guides strongly advised us against going further, citing safety concerns. After much deliberation and considering their advice, we decided to turn back. Although we didn’t reach the summit, the experience was profoundly rewarding. We took the time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and reflect on our journey.
Reflections and Life Lessons
This journey to Mt. Fuji was not just about reaching the summit. It was about the preparation, the training, and the camaraderie. The process itself was invaluable, teaching us resilience, determination, and the importance of enjoying the journey, not just the destination.
In life, the journey is often as significant as the goal. We should savor the process, understanding that every step, challenge, and moment of joy along the way is what truly enriches our experiences. Climbing Mt. Fuji was a challenge, but it also became a beautiful metaphor for life’s many journeys.
Although we didn’t reach the summit, the preparation, the journey, and the lessons learned were more valuable than merely achieving the target. It’s a reminder that in life, it’s not just about where we end up, but how we get there and who we become along the way.
